Documentary wedding photographer capturing bride and groom in South Wales

Documentary wedding photography in Cardiff and South Wales that lets you stay present in your day, capturing natural, unposed moments across ceremonies, receptions, and everything in between.

Timeless Photography

I don't just photograph weddings, I capture moments in time. Based in Cardiff, I bring a relaxed, documentary approach to celebrations across South Wales — from city venues like Cardiff City Hall and Insole Court, to rural barn and hilltop settings like Garth Farm, and coastal spots across Penarth and the Vale of Glamorgan. Whether working with medium format film, low-light digital, or a tailored blend of both, every wedding is documented with genuine care and timeless craft.

Digital Photography

I offer complete wedding coverage using modern, high-end digital cameras. This allows me to shoot in low-light venues, registry offices, and churches without flash, operating in near-silence so you and your guests can stay in the moment. I offer the same neurodivergency-friendly approach as in my event work, drawing on years of documentary and action photography to capture spontaneous celebration and candid reception scenes.

Monochrome Film Photography

Black and white is forever. No digital conversion can capture the tonal depth and texture of genuine monochrome film. I shoot medium format film, service my own vintage cameras here in Cardiff, hand-process my negatives, and create custom darkroom prints. It brings a tangible, heirloom quality to your wedding memories.

Pricing and Packages

Weddings are expensive; I try not to be. My offering is simple and easy to understand:

£650 per half-day, plus materials

Half-day rates

I bill by the half-day. Hire me for just the ceremony, just the reception, or everything. I consider a half-day to be up to 5 hours including travel to the venue.

Material costs

Materials are charged extra. For digital photography, this is negligible. For analogue film, I estimate around £100 extra per hour.

Editing

Standard editing costs are included in the price. Additional edits are charged at an hourly rate of £50.

Prints

Standard prints are self-service and charged extra per print. Hand-made enlargement prints are also available on enquiry for analogue shoots.

Backup/additional

I can bring a second photographer to shoot either additional angles or digital backups if I'm shooting analogue. £400 extra per half-day. I pay my seconds the same as I'd pay myself, minus editing (which I handle).

Travel

Travel within 30 minutes of Cardiff (including Newport, Penarth, Caerphilly, Pontypridd, and the Vale of Glamorgan) is included in the price. For venues across South Wales and further afield, travel is billed at direct cost.

Food/drinks

I don't require food arrangements from your catering, I can bring my own. Drinks are, however, appreciated.

Delivery

I aim to deliver finished photographs within 2-4 weeks, depending on volume and medium.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you meet couples before the wedding?

Yes I am available to meet over a coffee in Cardiff or on a video call before the day, though I'm also happy to coordinate everything via email if you prefer. We can discuss your venue, lighting, schedule, and what you want out of your wedding photographs.

How do you help people who feel awkward in front of the camera?

I photograph a wide variety of people, including many who are uncomfortable in front of a camera. I bring my experience of unobtrusive street and documentary photography to your event, and I operate quietly without flashguns to help me fade into the background. I'm not the loud type of photographer barking instructions to groups of people - I work around you.

What is your photography style?

I have a wide array of experience across various photographic disciplines, and I can adapt my style to different situations. However I primarily operate in a documentary-style approach, trying to capture those real, fleeting moments. We can arrange posed and group photos if you want them, or skip them entirely if that's not your sort of thing.

What happens if you are ill on the wedding day?

In the very unlikely event this should happen, and it hasn't happened yet, I will endeavour to arrange another trusted professional photographer to cover the day. As someone who repairs and sells cameras in Cardiff, I have a wide variety of contacts I can call on if needed, but it would have to be a very serious illness or injury to stop me from covering it myself.

Do you offer wedding videography?

Yes I can supply video, however any time spent shooting video is time I can't be focusing on the photos, and so I offer video either as the sole service or only when I bring a second photographer/videographer with me.

Do you photograph LGBTQ+, alternative, and culturally diverse weddings?

Yes of course. Every wedding is different, and I'll be there to document it.

Do you take last-minute or short-notice bookings?

Yes, pending availability. Get in touch as soon as possible and I'll respond quickly. I am often available same-day in the Cardiff area should something happen to your existing photographer, and I charge my standard rate even at short notice.

Do you require a deposit?

To confirm your booking and reserve the dates, I require a 50% deposit up-front. The remaining balance is to be paid after the wedding before I deliver the final gallery of photos. Deposits are unfortunately required due to the nature of booking wedding dates far in advance, and in the event of cancellation it's often too late to replace the booking with another. The deposit is refundable if the event is cancelled more than 6 months beforehand.
